Double Take, a zine about doubling in painting, published in Volume Poetry

My work begins with photographs and drawings of objects and everyday spaces, but the paintings that emerge are less concerned with describing these subjects than with exploring how perception and process can transform what is seen.
Through layering, stencilling, and repetition, images are gradually disrupted and destabilised. I am interested in the point at which a recognisable image begins to shift, opening up space for ambiguity, association, and imagination. Repetition plays an important role in this process, not as a means of copying, but as a way of generating difference, allowing unexpected relationships and new forms to emerge.

Rather than presenting a fixed meaning, my paintings invite viewers into a process of looking. Forms appear and dissolve, surfaces move between illusion and material presence, and perception remains in flux. The paintings develop through a dialogue between intention and chance, where unforeseen marks and interactions shape the direction of the work.
Underlying my practice is an interest in how perception is shaped through experience. I see painting as an event that unfolds between artist, material, and viewer – a space where looking becomes active, meanings remain open, and the imagination is engaged.
